Mostly we live in the past or in the all-consuming now. We are wasting our time if we are trying to recreate a past that never really existed. We have bigger things to think about! It’s time to pay more attention to our future.

Quoting Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, “The arrival of non-human intelligence is a very big deal.” It’s a much bigger deal than many people seem to realize.

The US military has a rule called 3000 dot 09 which mandates a human remain in the loop with a level of authoritative or meaningful, control. It’s a good policy and a kind of institutionalized guardrail, and soon, very soon, it will be the rule for all of us, not just the military.

In the future, the very near future, AI will be able to do practically everything for us. Think of the biggest number you can think of. That will be the number of decisions AI will make for us every minute of the near future. We will not be able to evaluate every decision in that kind of decision tree! Soon, very soon, we will only be the backseat drivers. What could go wrong, and what could go right?!?!

AI development is already a massively competitive race with huge social and political implications. These political tensions will inevitably get much worse.

Productivity in all realms of industry and science will explode, so that will be good. However, only the most intelligent, focused, and motivated young people will be engaged in the coming expansion. The rest of us will benefit, but it will be a lot harder for us to find a role.

We must find a way to inculcate our core values into the AI world in which we will find ourselves. As it has always been true, bad acters will subvert the new technologies towards nefarious ends if we let them!

In the video linked below, Mr. Schmidt also says that change will be coming so fast that we will lose track of our lives from as little as two years in the past. He’s wrong about that. We will not give up our affection and love for people and places gone by.

Mr. Schmidt’s and I will give you the same advice? “Ride the wave, and ride it every day!”
