Ex-president Donald Trump enunciated a policy on abortion. Even though many of his supporters like to think of him as an outsider, he is a politician; and he did a very political thing. He avoided taking a stand. He said that abortion decisions should be left to the States. In other words, don’t ask me. Let somebody else decide.

United we stand! Divided we fall!

Those words echo throughout history! Aesop developed that idea in two of his fables. The bible says, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” (Mark 3:25). John Dickinson, one of the Founding Fathers, put the idea into a song. “Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!” Abraham Lincoln used the House Divided analogy to put an end to the abomination of slavery.

Nothing could be more divisive and destructive to American culture than to have 50 different states craft 50 different laws on abortion or immigration, or any of our most intractable issues. However, by invoking the possibility of State’s Rights on the issue of abortion, Mr. Trump acknowledges how intractable and divisive the issue is. General consensus on abortion or immigration is not going to happen in Americas currently divided culture, so some sort of leeway or workable compromise must be found.

Yes, give the States a choice between Republican or Democrat mandates, but keep those choices within the Federal framework. Let the states be Red or Blue.

Proposed: Let the Republican and the Democrat legislators caucus separately on these thorny issues. Let the two parties write separate bills. Let the President sign both bills into law. Then let each state choose to adopt one or the other.

Don’t give us 50 different laws. Narrow the choices down to two.

Our differences do not have to tear us apart. We can work together.

United we stand! Divided we fall!
