Take the average person! He or she could do the job!
Proposed: Everybody says they want to get the politics out of Governance! So, why don’t we?!?!
As a thought experiment, consider the last 10 presidents: Trump, Biden, Obama, G W Bush, Clinton, G H Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon. No matter which side of the political spectrum you occupy, we can all agree it’s been alternating between miss and hit. The current system forces a roller coaster effect. It doesn’t matter if you end your name with a D or an R, the system favors your choice about every other election cycle and puts you in the losers bracket almost exactly half the time.
Depending on your party affiliation, the roller coaster peaks when your candidate gets elected and slumps when the other party comes to power.
Let’s Drain the Swamp and create a graveyard in the desert for all the political machinery!
Nothing could be simpler!
Accumulate the names of everyone who meets minimum level requirements. The candidates would have a clean record and a level of maturity. Additionally, we could use NASA’s astronaut candidate psychological stress testing to ensure a minimum level of calmness under stress. We’d want to include only people with a history of community service whose cognitive abilities are unimpaired.
After we accumulate the entire list, and on a specified day in November (or any other day we like), we could ask the computer to start cycling through the list. At an unspecified time on that chosen day, the Chief Justice could say, “Stop and Print,” and Voila! We have elected a president. I think we’d be a lot better off than we are now.
Instead of the Current System, give us a president who was a scout leader or a volunteer at the local food bank.
